Redox Sculpture (2009)

Front

Name: Reconnection

Year: 2009

Theme: Redox (thanks Mr Lim…)

Medium: Clay

This was supposed to be sent for some competition but obviously I have no time to bother about it… so i shall just paste the write up here…

Concept (not so) Brief:

In our race for modernization, nature is taken for granted. The environment’s importance can be seen from Singapore’s 10-year blueprint in response to the challenge of sustaining a quality environment while pursing economic progress, the Singapore Green Plan 2012. The renewal of Bishan Park and the restoration of the river may seem to simply be an almost completely man-made, natural landscape, however, that is not all. Bishan Park is still a place to reconnect oneself to nature.

This sculpture focuses mainly on the connection between nature and urbanization. It is made up of two portions. The upper portion of the sculpture is a representation of urban growth. They depict shoots reaching out towards the sky similar to how one move upwards through development where the sky’s the limit. The lower half of the sculpture penetrates the ground creating the connection between modernization and nature. It almost seems like nature hinders the development. However, the sculpture can also be seen as a whole with the hill. With the aid of the hill, or nature, the development goes higher, better and further.

Medium to be used:

Painted Steel, Thermochromatic paint

Steel is made out of iron and carbon, both of which are formed by nature. This enhances the nature aspect of the sculpture. The sculpture is painted with thermochromatic paint. The paint changes color with the temperature of the surroundings giving the sculpture a wide array of colors. At different times of day, the sculpture will have different color. This shows how nature can affect our development. With nature, our development is given different chances to shine and different ways to present ourselves. There are many possible kinds of development and this is brought about by the connection between nature and urban development.

The thermochromatic pant changes color at a temperature of 30 degrees celsius. This makes it a suitable color changing material in Singapore’s climate whereby the temperature in the morning and at night ranges under 30 while the temperature in the afternoon ranges slightly above 30.

  1. Quite ke xi you didn’t go for the competition D: Urs fit well :D

I like how the finger-like structure goes through the platform, how the base looks stable while the top gracefully twists and tangles.
